What is the significance of the first and 15th of each lunar month?

Master JinBodhi, the founder of Bodhi Meditation, once said:
"We can be closest to buddhas and bodhisattvas on the first and 15th of each lunar month. If on these days we participate in offering meals and fruits, prostration, blessing, the merits, virtues and energy blessing obtained are far greater than what can be obtained on other days."

The Turtle That Listened

A little boy had a turtle and one day he tried all means to lure the turtle to stick out its neck but failed. He tried hitting it with a stick as well as with his hand.

But no matter how hard he hit and knocked at it, the turtle refused to budge. The boy was very frustrated and was unhappy throughout the day.

The boy’s grandfather noticed this and smiled. He then placed the turtle on a gently warm heater and soon thereafter the turtle stuck out its head, limbs and tail.

The boy was overjoyed and his grandfather told him this, “If you want others to follow your wish, do not use force. Try to be considerate and caring instead. It is often more effective."

Frequently, we want others to heed our advice, change or act according to our own wishes. One will find that it is most ineffective when we use force or be harsh with our words.

Why not follow the moral of the story as the grandpa said, “If you want others to follow your wishes or to change, do not use force or criticism, try to give more care and warmth to others and you will see better results.”

The Curse of the Daughter-in-law

One person told this story:

Her mother-in-law fell ill, who was living in another city, and as there was no one to help,,her husband really hopedthat she could go and take care of his mother.

When her mother-in-law called,she answered,
“Mum, I’m sorry to hear you’re ill.but I broke my leg, and am in pain,so I cannot go and take care of you.

In fact, no such thing had happened; however, two months later.she really had a mysterious fall and broke her knee capand had to lie down at home.So how did this misfortune come about? Is it because of compassion? No, this is because of repaying kindness with ingratitude.

Because of you own narrow-mindedness, your heart will not be able to be compassionate; enlightenment is not possible, and any illnesses will increase instead of disappearing.

So you need to open your heart, and really use your compassion to love the world, love your mother-in-law, and love those people who are related to you.

The importance of a compassionate heart

[Master JinBodhi’s Aphorism]

Regardless of your approach, it is incomparable to the importance of having a compassionate heart.

If you think of hurting someone, remember that you should do less harm and instead be more tolerant.

When you blame others, regardless of whether it is your child or friend, be kind in your words.

When you try to gain benefits, be less greedy but more generous.

You are indeed rich and honored. You have an auspicious life and are at peace.

How to change our fate for the better?

[Master JinBodhi’s Aphorism]

If we want to change our fate for the better, we must be more compassionate, more generous in giving and act dumb.

A person who is shrewd is always acting too harshly and being too calculative. Such a person will never become a man of great honor.

就要多一份慈悲、多一份布施、多一份装傻;

Gem or stone? Which do you want to be?

[Gem and Stone]

If you stand firm, you are a gem.

Once defeated and fallen, you are a bunch of stones.

Having endured through challenges, you are a beautiful landscape; this is also true for life.

Commentary by Jerome:

The challenges in life are tests for you to overcome. If you are overwhelmed and defeated by these tests, you have not learnt your lesson in life. Having endured and overcome your challenges, you will be a better person. Just like how a gemstone endures multiple cuts to become a gem. Otherwise, it would have remained a normal stone.

Can fame and success bring us happiness?

As a person gains fame and success, we may forget about our original intention of achieving something, which earn us our first success. If we gain fame and success through unscrupulous means by doing things against our conscience, we can never be happy…

The video shows how a neighborhood dog slowly transformed into a famous dog. Eventually the two persons meet again after they are transformed. Bea feels that the flow and concept of the entire video is quite good. At the end of the video, he wrote, “Cultivate a better world” on a blackboard (to create a better world).

In our quest to accumulate wealth, we need to constantly assess whether we are creating damage to our environment by our actions.

Listen More, Speak Less!

Once, a messenger from a smaller kingdom came to China bearing four golden statues as a tribute to the Chinese emperor who was delighted. However, the messenger bluntly posed a difficult question to the Chinese emperor: Which among these four golden statues do you think is the most valuable?

The emperor pondered over many options. Inviting a jewel specialist to evaluate its weight, value and workmanship, who determined that the statues were of similar value. The emperor got anxious as the messenger was still waiting for an official reply. So, in the end, a retired senior minister said that he had an idea.

The emperor invited the messenger to the palace hall. The old minister brimming with confidence stood grasping four straws. He then inserted the straws separately into the four statues’ ears.

The straw from the first golden statue fell out from its other ear. The straws from the second and third statues fell out from their mouths. The straw from the fourth statue dropped into its belly without making any further sound or movement.

The old minister proclaimed, “This fourth statue is the most valuable!” The messenger held his silence as the answer was correct.

This story tells us that the most valuable person may not be someone who is the most eloquent. We were born with 2 ears and 1 mouth suggesting that we should listen more and speak less. The yardstick of maturity is measured by a person’s ability to be a good listener.

New Year Resolution

[Promises we make to ourselves in the New Year]

Be filial.
Promise to be more filial in the New Year. Filial piety is the most important virtue of all. We always think that providing for our parents is sufficient for their happiness. What we often neglect is the concern and companionship that they truly need from us.
Be friendly.
Promise to be friendlier in the New Year. Believe that everyone around you is someone that you have affinity with, especially friends whom you have known for a long time. Treat everyone with sincerity and you will get sincere treatment in return.
Care for ourselves.
Promise to take better care of our own health in the New Year. Get enough rest and establish a balance between work and relaxation. Watch our diets and get sufficient nutrients from what we eat. Exercise regularly to improve the strength and resilience of our bodies. Remind ourselves constantly that our physical bodies are the capital for everything that we want to achieve. If we lose our health, we would lose everything.
Constant learning.
Promise to dedicate time for our own learning in the New Year. Never restrict our knowledge to what we learn in school. That is just technical scientific knowledge. Hold on to the curiosity that we have towards life and knowledge. Proactively engage in activities that will enrich our minds as well as our lives.
Be kind
Promise to be a kind person in the New Year. Kindness is what makes us human. It is a quality that we must never lose. Regardless of what has happened to us in the past, we must never lose that intrinsic kindness in our nature.
Remember your dreams.
Promise to stay true to our dreams in the New Year. We can only be true to ourselves if we do not forget our dreams. Stay dedicated to our goals and never give up on pursuing our dreams. May all of us succeed in achieving all that we dream of in the New Year. Respect our past by remembering it; Welcome the future by not fearing it. Do not fear what comes - be it rain or shine. In this way will our dreams take off and our hopes be fulfilled in the New Year.

How to communicate better?

Communications is important! However, how can we stop ourselves from being driven by angry emotions, and start to communicate sincerely?

Having a good mood and atmosphere, is something we cannot do without.

In any communication between 2 people, 70% is dependent on emotion, 30% on content.

When we are in a bad mood, the content will be distorted.

Even if there is an abundance of affection, without good emotion, whatever we say can end up a form of venting via angry words.

The heart wants to communicate, but, body language and tone can indicate otherwise. In this instance, there is conflicting intention as to whether we want to properly communicate or instead challenge each other.

The mouth talks about wanting to communicate, however, our temper seems to indicate otherwise. Again, there is conflicting intention as to whether we want to communicate or quarrel.

To communicate well, one must be sincere, calm, and complemented by the right tone and words.

The person who can control your temper, is someone you love; The person who can withstand your temper, is someone you love.

You are someone with initiative, if you can control your emotion; On the contrary, if you are led by your emotions, you are destined to be passive.

Learn to communicate, learn to adjust and tamper our mood and emotion, learn to control our temper. Do not treat the people you love with your worst behaviour!

Why its said that one should think good about others?

[A black dot on a piece of white paper]

Although the dot is small,

it is still the focus point of people.

Actually,

besides the small black dot

it is still a very useful piece of white paper.

If you

focus on the black dot, the world will become smaller and darker.

forget the black dot, the world will become bigger and brighter.

Thus

discover the virtue of others,

do not focus on their shortcomings.

執著黑點,世界只會越小越黑;

How to be truly wealthy?

"To become wealthy, one must first give."
Are we wealthy when we receive from others or when we give to others?
People who always receive from others are poor because their attitude is akin to that of beggars; always seeking from others. On the other hand, altruistic people are rich because their minds are magnanimous. Altruistic people will never feel inferior. When hungry and left with just a piece of cookie, he is still willing to share it with others. Such a person will definitely be wealthy and auspicious in the future.
How do we become wealthy? Buddha teaches us to give and make offerings. The more one gives, the more one receives. If a person thinks that he has nothing to offer, and decides to stop giving, then he is narrow minded. When a person says he has nothing to give, all divine beings who hear his words will respond to his thoughts and give him nothing.
One important principle in life is to give often to others. You will realize that the more you give, the more karmic blessings you accumulate for yourself. Does this principle make sense to you?

Drying the blankets under the sun

The past few days have been bright and sunny. It was a great opportunity to wash and dry the sheets and blankets at home.

After washing the blankets, I took them up to the rooftop balcony to dry them under the sun. I saw that I was not the only one. My neighbors’ sheets were already hanging on the racks. The racks were nearly full and I was almost unable to find a spot for my blankets.

Around noon, I went up to the balcony to turn and beat the blankets so as to remove any dust. Without bamboo sticks, I had to use my palms to pat the dust off my blankets.

As the sun’s rays shone down on me, I was reminded of Master’s Meditation of Greater Illumination. I decided to do some visualization right there and then…

As I spread my arms and closed my eyes, I imagined that I was the old blanket spread out under the sun. As the sunlight shone down on me, my entire body was filled with bright energy.

Before long, my whole body felt nice and warm. I visualized myself using my hands to lightly pat my body. Wherever I pat my body, disease and fatigue evaporated into the air.

After a while, I began to perspire. My body felt more at ease after that, as if the perspiration has had removed the impurities from my body.

The blankets soaked up the warmth of the sun that afternoon. As I covered myself with my blanket that night, I could smell the sun, and felt myself being enveloped by the warmth of the sun’s rays.

The art of dealing with gain and loss

When one is happy and successful, take it with a pinch of salt. When one faces loss, learn to accept it. You will only be able to gain something if you have the wisdom to let go of it when the situation arises. Simplify your life. Only then will you realise that the obstacles in your life are the most suitable for you.

Master Jin Bodhi's aspiration

I have an aspiration: I wish that kind hearted people like us can go and help the cold and hungry people in poverty, to distribute blankets and food, just like Santa Clause in fairy tale stories,  and to materialise the New Year wishes of all the poor. I hope that this wish of mine can become a reality. I wish to see more satisfied and happy smiles on the faces of the poor. Let’s all wait no more and start to help, just like the Goddess of Mercy. In this way, the merit we accumulate will be boundless!

Live in simple life

When life is going well and smooth, we must not be over joyful. Similarly, when life is not going well, we must not take things too hard.

We can only take on more responsibilities if we know how to let go where necessary.

Try to live simply;  only then, will we be able to appreciate what really matters in life.

The Wisdom of Living

Be flexible and adaptive. Be calm and prudent.

There was once a man who paid a visit to a meditation master.

As he did not notice that the door to the meditation centre was small, his head hit the door frame.

The meditation master said to this man, “If you do not wish to bump your head, you must learn to lower your head.”

The secret in palm reading

[Zen story - The secret in palm reading]

A person who lived a normal life went to seek the meditation master to ask questions on fate. When he met the master, he asked, “Is there really a such thing as destiny?” “Yes”, was the answer the master gave. “Am I destined to be poor my whole life?”, he continued. The meditation master asked him to stretch out his left hand, and pointed, “Here, look closely. This horizontal line is love line, this diagonal line is career line and this vertical is life line.” Then, the master closed his palm into a tight fist and asked the man to follow accordingly. He asked the man, “Where are the lines now?” The man replied, “All in my hands!” The master continued, “How about your destiny?” It was then the man realised that there was no point in asking people to explain his own suffering and happiness. Good cause will lead to good outcomes, and his destiny was in fact in in his own hands!

How to maintain a pure heart?

There was a Buddhist devotee who picked fresh flowers from her own garden every day and brought them to the temple as an offering to Buddha. One day, when she was delivering the flowers as usual, she happened to meet the Zen Master coming out from the temple hall.

The Zen Master, upon seeing the devotee, praised her, “You are such a devoted Buddhist to offer fresh flowers to the Buddha every day! According to the sutras, people who often offer fresh flowers to the Buddha would be blessed with a dignified appearance in their next lifetime.”

The devotee upon hearing the compliment happily replied, “This is what I should do. Every day, I feel my spirit being cleansed whenever I come to the temple to pay respect to the Buddha. However, the moment I reach home, troubles would come and haunt me. As housewives in this noisy city, how do we maintain a pure heart?”

Instead of replying the devotee directly, the Zen Master asked instead, “Since you always offer fresh flowers to the Buddha, you must have very good knowledge about flowers. How do you keep flowers fresh?”

Devotee replied, “To maintain the freshness of flowers, all we have to do is to change the water in the flower vase daily and also snip away a part of the stem at the bottom of the stalk. This is because that part of the stem is submerged in the water and this causes it to rot easily, affecting the ability of the flower to absorb water. When flowers fail to absorb water properly, they will wilt easily.”

The Zen Master replied, “The rationale for maintaining a pure heart is the same. We are like flowers living in an environment that is similar to the water that support the flowers. Only when we constantly purify our spirit and soul will we be able to change our temperament and aura. We also need to constantly repent, self-reflect and correct our past bad habits as well as our behaviour. Only then will we be able to absorb energy from the Universe.”

The devotee, upon hearing the Zen Master’s reply, joyfully thanked the Zen Master, “Thanks for your invaluable teaching, Master. I hope that, in the near future, I will have the opportunity to stay in the temple for a period and listen to the drumming of the morning bells in addition to enjoying the peace and serenity of the chanting.”

The Zen Master replied, “Your breathing is akin to the singing at the Vatican, the beating of your pulse is like the drumming of the morning bells, your body is the Universe and your two ears are Bodhi leading you to enlightenment. Why then do you need to be physically staying in the temple when you can enjoy peace and quiet everywhere if you choose to?”
